CONFR I -Semestre I.I.17a Tu or vous?

OR
?????????
Tu or vous?

When talking to ONE person, the French have two ways of saying "you".

"tu" (the "familiar you") is used to talk to someone your own age or younger or to a member of your family:
With your little brother or your mother,
use
tu - "the familiar you"
"vous" (the "formal you") is used to talk to anybody else. Not using this form is a show of disrespect to older people you do not know, especially to those in some kind of authority:
With a judge at court, with your French teacher, use vous - "the formal you"
The reverse also happens. If you use "vous" with somebody younger or your own age, you are being cold and unfriendly.

Class discussion: Would you use "tu" or "vous" with this guy?

When talking to TWO or more people, the French always use "vous". In this case, "vous" means "you all" or "y'all" - just like they say in Dixie!
Y'all come over for barbecue next Sunday, hear? In French, "vous" can also mean "you all" or "y'all"

Tu es français?
Vous êtes français?
Vous êtes français?
Vous êtes françaises?
