Tu or vous?
When talking to ONE person, the French have two ways of saying "you".
"tu" (the "familiar you") is used to talk to someone your own age or younger or to a member of your family:
With your little brother or your mother, use tu - "the familiar you" |
With a judge at court, with your French teacher, use vous - "the formal you" |
Class discussion: Would you use "tu" or "vous" with this guy? |
When talking to TWO or more people, the French always use "vous". In this case, "vous" means "you all" or "y'all" - just like they say in Dixie!
Y'all come over for barbecue next Sunday, hear? In French, "vous" can also mean "you all" or "y'all"
