              E. LES CHIFFRES ORDINAUX

• The ordinal numbers (vs. the cardinal or "regular" numbers).

• Notice that there is only a masculine and feminine form for premier/ première

• Notice how the French like to use Roman numerals for many things: the number of the unit, the quartiers or neighborhoods, centuries, etc.

EXAMPLES: 
 1. Only the French word for "first" has a masculine and feminine form: premier vs. première
   
la première leçon - the first lesson. la leçon = feminin

le premier ministre = the prime minister (the English word "prime" comes from the French premier)

Les russes étaient les premiers dans l'´espace 
= The Russians were the first (ones) in Space.

Malika et Fatima étaient les premières dans ma famille qui n'ont pas porté une voile 
= Malika and Fatima were the first ones (women) in my family not to wear a veil.                         

2. Although everything else takes the feminine form, it is not gender sensitive:

la Cinquième République, la sixième rue, la septième année
le cinquième train, le sixième chapitre, le septième jour

SYMBOLES:

NUMÉRAUX ROMAINS:
The French use Roman numerals more than the English or the Americans, especially when referring to the century (See below) Examples:

la Ve République = the Fifth Republic
le XVIe arrondissement (quartier à Paris) = The Sixteenth Arrondissement or neighborhood in Paris.


LES SIÈCLES: Here are some examples of the centuries:

Le XVIIIe siècle (the 18th century, 1701-1800) 
Le XIXe siècle (the 19th century1801-1900)               
Le XXe siècle (the 20th century: 1901-2000)          
Le XXIe siècle (the 21st century: 2001-2100)
