| The expression il y a is the most important expression in French or any language for that matter! Learn it well and you'll achieve a lot of communication from this simple little phrase! |
The French expression Il y a is the equivalent of both there is and there are in English:
Exemples:
Il y a une piscine dans notre jardin.
There is a pool in our garden.
Il y a sept pièces dans ma maison.
There are seven rooms in my house.

| Il y a un tapis marocain dans ma chambre. There is (I have) a Moroccan rug in my bedroom. |

| Il y a des problèmes avec mon orthographie. There are problems with my spelling, which also means: I have problems with my spelling. |

| Il y a beaucoup d'élèves dans sa classe de géographie. There are many students in his Geography class. Maybe we should say: Il y trop d'élève dans sa classe de géographie! There are too many students in his Geography class! |

| Est-ce que tu connais Bogor? Il y a trop de cerfs (deer) dans le jardin du Palais Présidentiel. Ils mangent beaucoup de gazon et ils font du caca partout. |

Exemples:

EXERCICE: Describe the pictures below. Write as many sentences with "il y a" as you can. When you run out of ideas, write as many phrases as you can with "il n'y a pas" and tell us what is NOT in the photo!
