HABITER vs. VIVRE

French has two verbs which can be translated by the English verb "to live": habiter and vivre. This can be confusing to English speakers, but in fact there are distinct differences in meaning and usage for the two verbs.

LE VERBE RÉGULIER «HABITER»

Voici les Sélénites, les gens qui habitent dans la Lune, selon le grand cinéaste Georges Méliès. These are the Selenites, the people who live on the moon, according to the great cinematographer George Méliès. Habiter is the equivalent of to live in, to reside in, to inhabit, used to express where one lives. Habiter is regular verb and may or may not take a preposition. Both of the following are correct: J'habite Jakarta or J'habite à Jakarta. Les Sélénites habitent la Lune or Les Sélénites habitent dans la lune.

• J'habite dans une grande appartement

au centre-ville. I live in a big apartment

(located) in the center of town.

•Tu habites où? Est-ce que tu habites loin

de l'école internationale de Jakarta?

Where do you live? Do you live far from

Jakarta International School?

LE VERBE IRRÉGULIER «VIVRE»

Dans le film de Coppola, on voit comment Marie Antoinette vit dans le luxe. In Coppola's film, we see how Marie Antoinette lives in luxury. Vivre is an irregular -RE verb and means to live, to be alive, to exist - it usually expresses how or when one lives. Comment est-ce qu'on vit? On vit dans la paix. How do we live? We live in peace. Selon Louis Armstrong, nous vivons dans un monde merveilleux. According to Louis Armstrong, we are living in a wonderful world.

My great grandparents are still living! • On vive bien à Jakarta si on travaille pour

in Jakarta if you work for an oil company.

•The questions «Est-ce que vous vivez

dans une appartement?» and «Est-ce que

vous habiter dans une appartement?» have

practically the same meaning. This is where

the two meanings overlap...the first question

is more about your lifestyle, the second

question is just asking you whether you live

in an apartment.

LE VERBE RÉGULIER «PARTAGER»

Les enfants partagent un cornet de glace. The children are sharing an ice-cream cone. There is nothing irregular about the verb partager even though the nous form has that extra e after the g: nous partageons. The spelling is behaving the way it should. The combination duo of ge and ge makes the g sound like the g in gee or the g in gin and not like the g in gun or in goat. Oddly enough, English almost has the same rule as French, but it is less consistent: compare the g in get and geranium. A ge will NEVER sound like the g in get, unless the word is borrowed from English or another language.

too much quantity.

LE VERBE RÉGULIER «RANGER»

Normalement, Hélène range sa chambre le samedi. Helen normally tidies, picks up and puts things away in her room every Saturday. You'll need four words in English to translate the verb "ranger": to tidy, to arrange, to order, to put things away. For obvious reasons, the verb "ranger" and "partager" have the spelling rules. Can you tell me why? If you can't. See "partager" above. Does the English "park ranger" have any relation to this French word- that is, somebody who keeps law and order in a park ?

À Paris, mon restaurant préféré se trouve au quartier Latin. C'est un restaurant tunisien qui s'appelle «Chez Hamadi». Là, ils font un bon couscous! My favorite restaurant is situated (literally 'finds itself') in the Latin Quarter. It is a Tunisian restaurant that is called (calls itself) "Chez Hamadi" There, they make a good couscous. (North African dish). Although se trouver can be conjugated in the first and second person, we are only focusing today on its special meaning in expressions with the third person, singular and plural. Literally it means "it finds itself" which makes little sense in English.... how can a restaurant find itself? Better translation would be "is located" or "is situated" Le Louvre se trouve à côté de la rue de Rivoli. The Louvre is located next to the rue de Rivoli.
