FR I Semester I.INTR.3 On parle français

ON PARLE FRANÇAIS
In today's world, French is an international language spoken daily by more than 100 people. French is understood by another 100 people in many countries and regions of the globe.

IN EUROPE
French is not only spoken in France (La France) but also in parts of Belgium (La Belge), Switzerland (La Suisse) and Luxembourg (Le Luxembourg).

IN THE AMERICAS
In Canada, about one-third of the population speaks French. These French speakers live mainly in the province of Quebec (Le Québec). They are descendants of French settlers who came to Canada in the 17th and 18th centuries.

In the United States, French is understood and spoken in many families whose French and French-Canadian ancestors came to Louisiana (La Louisiane) and New England (La Nouvelle-Angleterre) at various times in our history.

In the Caribbean, French and Creole are spoken in the Republic of Haiti (Haiti). French is also spoken on the islands of Martinique (La Martinique) and Guadeloupe (La Guadeloupe) and in French Guyana (La Guyane Française) on the north shore of the South American continent. With the exception of Haiti (Haiti) an independent country) the inhabitants of these places are actually French citizens on French soil, and on equal footing with French people living in Paris or Marseille.

IN AFRICA
French is an important language in independent countries which have strong commercial and cultural ties to France, the majority being her former colonies. The Congo (former Zaïre) was a colony of Belgium.

In Western and Central Africa, about 20 countries have adapted French as their official language, These countries include Senegal (Le Sénégal), the Ivory Coast (La Côte d'Ivoire) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (La République démocratique du Congo). French is also spoken on the large island of Madagascar (Madagascar).

In North Africa, French is understood and spoken by many people in Algeria (L'Algérie), Morocco (Le Maroc) and Tunisia (La Tunisie). More than 2 million people from these countries have emigrated to France and have become French citizens.

IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD

French is spoken as far as Tahiti (Tahiti, or La Polynésie Française) and New Caledonia (La Nouvelle Calédonie), two French territories in the South Pacific.

In the Middle East, French is still taught and spoken in Lebanon (Le Liban).

French is also used and understood by many Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian families who have left their countries (Le Vietnam, Le Cambodge, Le Laos) to settle in other parts of the world.
