FRI -Semestre I.I.08b. Quel âge as-tu?

 Quel âge as-tu?
"How old are you?" or literally "What age hast thou?"
Roméo: What âge hast thou?
Did the literal translation sound like Shakespeare? You bet! French is that much closer to old English. One of the big advantages of learning French is that you can effortlessly understand Shakespeare. The informal "tu" form is exactly what "thou" used to be in English!

There are several ways to ask this question:

• Quel âge as-tu?
• Quel âge est-ce que tu as?
• Tu as quel âge?

Answer: J'ai + number + ans
Example: J'ai quinze ans.  
Literal Translation: "I have fifteen years"
English Translation: I'm fifteen years old

 Notice that in English we use the verb "to be" : I am 15 years old. The French view it differently! In French you say I have 15 years:

 J'ai 15 ans.

Make sure you know how to say your age so you can answer the question effortlessly. Here are some samples:



Quel âge as-tu?    /kɛ la ʒa 'ty/

10: J'ai dix ans.   /ʒei di 'z ɑ̃/

11: J'ai onze ans.   /ʒei  ɔ̃  'z ɑ̃/

12: J'ai douze ans.   /ʒei du 'z ɑ̃/

13: J'ai treize ans.   /ʒei tre 'z ɑ̃/

14: J'ai quatorze ans.   /ʒei ka tɔʀ 'z ɑ̃/

15: J'ai quinze ans.   /ʒei k ɛ̃ 'z ɑ̃/

10: J'ai seize ans.   /ʒei sɛ 'z ɑ̃/

10: J'ai dix-sept ans.   /ʒei di sɛ 't ɑ̃/

10: J'ai dix-huit ans.   /ʒei di zɥi 't ɑ̃/
